Background of the Study
Social media journalism has revolutionized the way news is disseminated, providing a platform for immediate updates, diverse viewpoints, and interactive communication. In Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State, the rise of social media as a primary source of news has raised significant ethical concerns. Unlike traditional media, social media platforms often lack the editorial oversight necessary to ensure that news is accurate, fair, and balanced. This has resulted in the proliferation of misinformation, sensationalism, and biased reporting, which undermines the credibility of news outlets and can distort public perception. Journalists using social media in Katsina face ethical dilemmas related to verification of sources, accuracy of information, and the potential harm caused by spreading false or misleading content. This study aims to investigate the ethical challenges faced by social media journalists in Katsina, focusing on the practices and ethical considerations that shape the news reported on these platforms (Ali & Ibrahim, 2023; Yusuf & Usman, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has opened new avenues for journalists in Katsina to engage with their audiences and report on issues of local and national importance, it has also created ethical challenges. The rapid spread of unverified information, the pressure to report breaking news without proper fact-checking, and the risks associated with anonymous or biased sources are some of the significant ethical issues faced by social media journalists. These challenges have led to concerns about the accuracy, fairness, and potential harm of social media journalism. The lack of clear guidelines and ethical training for journalists in this area further exacerbates the situation. This study aims to explore these ethical concerns and assess the impact of social media journalism on public trust in Katsina (Musa & Raji, 2023; Aminu & Ibrahim, 2024).
